If you've spent any time in Kielce, you've almost certainly heard locals proudly refer to themselves as Scyzoryki. The nickname appears everywhere, from football chants and local businesses to music and souvenirs, and has become one of the city's strongest symbols of identity.
But where did it come from?
Like many regional nicknames in Poland, the answer is not entirely straightforward. Historians agree on one thing: nobody can say with complete certainty how the name originated. What they can do is piece together the evidence and separate long-standing traditions from local myths.
The Nickname Is Older Than Most People Realise
The earliest known written reference to people from Kielce as Scyzoryki, meaning "pocket knives" or "penknives", dates back to 1911.
In that year, Tadeusz Włoszek, a curator at the Museum of the Polish Tourist Society, referred to two young donors as kieleckie scyzoryki. He offered no explanation, suggesting the nickname was already well understood by local people at the time.
That makes it clear the expression was already part of everyday language more than a century ago, although it almost certainly existed even earlier.
A Region Built on Iron
The most widely accepted explanation is closely linked to the history of the Świętokrzyskie region itself.
For centuries, this part of Poland formed the heart of the Old Polish Industrial Region, one of the country's earliest centres of iron production. Local mines, forges and blacksmiths supplied tools and metal goods long before modern industry developed elsewhere.
While there is little evidence that Kielce itself became famous specifically for making pocket knives, the region's long association with metalworking makes it easy to understand how a nickname connected with knives could have emerged.
Rather than referring to a single workshop or factory, Scyzoryki may simply reflect the area's reputation for skilled metal craftsmanship.
An Everyday Tool That Everyone Recognised
Another popular theory is rather more practical.
Pocket knives were once an essential part of daily life across rural Poland. Farmers, craftsmen and labourers used them for everything from cutting rope and repairing equipment to preparing food or carving wood.
Some historians believe people in neighbouring regions began associating this everyday habit particularly with residents of Kielce, eventually giving rise to the nickname.
It is an appealing explanation, although there is no historical evidence that people from Kielce carried pocket knives more often than anyone else.
From Playful Nickname to Local Pride
As with many regional nicknames in Poland, Scyzoryki may not have begun as a compliment.
Across the country, neighbouring communities have long given each other distinctive labels, some affectionate and others gently teasing. Over time, however, these names often become symbols of pride rather than mockery.
That appears to be exactly what happened in Kielce.
Today, the nickname represents resilience, independence and a strong sense of local identity. It is embraced by residents, businesses and supporters of Korona Kielce football club, and has become inseparable from the city's image.
Its popularity grew even further during the 1990s thanks to Kielce-born rapper Liroy, whose hit song Scyzoryk introduced the nickname to audiences across Poland and helped cement its place in popular culture.
Separating History From Local Legend
Several other stories continue to circulate, including claims that the nickname originated from knife fights or from a once-famous local knife-making industry.
While these tales add colour to local folklore, historians have found little evidence to support them. Most researchers consider them later attempts to explain a nickname that was already well established by the beginning of the twentieth century.
A Nickname That Has Stood the Test of Time
Although its precise origin may never be known, Scyzoryki has become far more than an old regional nickname.
It reflects the industrial heritage of the Świętokrzyskie region, celebrates a distinctive local identity and connects generations of Kielce residents through a shared piece of history. Whether heard at a football match, seen on a shop sign or mentioned in conversation, the name continues to represent a city that proudly embraces its traditions while looking confidently to the future.
